National Fire Authority (NFA) attended to a fire incident that destroyed the top floor of a double storey house at Rifle Range in Vatuwaqa early this morning.
At 01.01am, the Suva Fire Station was alerted of a fire at Lot 9, Karsanji Street and the fire crew responded immediately.
Upon arrival at the scene, the fire team saw the top floor of a double storey building on fire. The fire team quickly used two deliveries of water from the fire truck to extinguish the fire and stop its spread to other parts of the building.
The firefighters fought hard to contain the fire to the top level as it was windy and there were a number of buildings adjacent to the burning building.
Three fire trucks from Suva and one from Valelevu Fire Station responded to the fire incident. Eighteen firefighters and 3 fire officers were at the scene to fight the fire.
In another fire incident yesterday, a family lost everything after the house they were staying in was burnt down at Nayawa Sub Division in Sigatoka.
The Sigatoka Fire Station was alerted through a call at 1.16 pm about the fire and the fire team responded immediately.
Upon arrival at the scene, the fire team saw the 2 bedroom wooden and corrugated iron house engulfed in flames. The fire team quickly used one delivery of water to extinguish the fire.
NFA once again reminds home owners to strictly adhere to fire safety precautions in and around their homes. Fire safety is everyone’s responsibility and we urge all members of the public to take heed and ensure that your properties are fire-safe.
The NFA is also requesting the public to call on 910 as soon as there is a fire so that the fire team can respond on time.
Fire investigations are underway to determine the causes for both fire incidents.
