National Fire Authority (NFA) attended to a fire emergency call at Gaji Road, in Lagilagi settlement this afternoon.
At 3.30 pm, the Suva Fire Station was alerted of the house fire and the fire crew responded immediately. Upon arrival at the scene, the crew found a timber and corrugated iron lean-to house fully engulfed in flames. The crew quickly used two deliveries of water from the fire trucks to extinguish the fire and stopped its spread to other adjacent houses.
A quick call on 910 enabled the firefighters to respond to the fire incident on time and save the houses surrounding the burning house.
The house was occupied by three people at the time of the fire but no injuries were reported.
NFA Chief Executive Officer Mr. Puamau Sowane says people should take extra precautions in and around their homes to prevent any fire.
“We urge the general public to take extra precautions and practice fire safety to avoid an unnecessary loss to your properties. “Always supervise children during this school holidays to prevent them from any fire injuries, “he said.
“NFA sympathizes with the family for their loss of property in the fire this afternoon but we need people to be more resilient towards fire safety. “People should start taking ownership and responsibility of fire safety in their homes,” he said.
“NFA is working towards building resilient communities and we need the support of the people to reduce the number of unwanted fires. “Fire safety is everyone’s responsibility and people should start adhering to messages on fire safety.
“Always ensure to first call NFA on the toll-free fire emergency number 910 as soon as there is a fire emergency so that our firefighters can respond on time,” he added.
An investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the fire incident.
