The National Fire Authority (NFA) continues to show its unwavering commitment to the wellbeing of its staff and their families, through a compassionate policy that provides financial support to the families of firefighters who die in the line of duty, while still employed by the organization.
Under this policy, NFA’s medical insurer offers a medical benefit of $10,000 to the next of kin of any NFA staff member who passes away while in service.
The comments came from NFA Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane while handing over a Term Life benefit of $10,000 to Mrs Sei Kalini Tarusila, wife of Qualified Firefighter (QFF) Peceli Maisuva, who died after a short illness in October while serving at Levuka Fire Station.
"We are immensely proud of the bravery and dedication shown by our firefighters every day," he said.
"This policy is one way we can express our gratitude for their service and ensure that their families are supported in the difficult times following their loss.
“This is in line with the National Fire Authority’s policy, which aims to ease the financial burden on the families of its fallen members.
“This initiative, which began in 2022, is part of NFA's broader effort to recognize the dedication and sacrifice of its firefighters, who risk their lives daily to protect the community.”
This initiative was first implemented in 2022 after the tragic passing of a firefighter.
In 2023, 2 more firefighters tragically lost their lives while serving with NFA. So far this year, 4 firefighters have passed away and each of their families has been given the $10,000 benefit to help ease their loss.
“To date, a total of $70,000 has been distributed through this policy, which reflects NFA's investment in honouring and compensating the families of its fallen heroes,” Mr Sowane said.
“The NFA remains deeply committed to its staff and their families, recognizing their invaluable contributions to the organization and the community and will continue to stand by its staff and their families, reinforcing its position as an organization that deeply values the lives and well-being of its employees and the wider community it serves.”
