Dangerous Goods are grouped in nine classes, according to common dangers. All classes, except infectious substances (Class 6.2) and radioactive substances (Class 7), are controlled by the Dangerous Goods Act 1985.
Each class has a distinctive diamond-shaped symbol with the class number at the bottom of the diamond. These symbols appear on the labels of containers and as signs on vehicle loads. The internationally recognised symbols clearly identify the type of substance and the main danger.

Class Diamond System:

NFA ensure that the legislative requirements of fire safety services in structures are built and maintained in accordance with the Building Code of Fiji. 
NFA is involved in the regulation of the Building Code of Fiji. In particular, the Chief Officer is responsible for reporting on fire safety matters as referenced by the Building Regulations 2006. Such matters include but are not limited to the following:

• Fire mains
• Hydrants, hose reels
• Control valves
• Booster assemblies
• Emergency vehicle access
• Fire indicator panels
• Location and contents of fire control centers

Hazardous Materials are substances that may be corrosive, flammable, explosive, spontaneously combustible, toxic, oxidising, radioactive, biological, water reactive or gases under pressure or liquefied.

Fuels such as petrol and LPG provide by far the largest volume of dangerous goods, and many industries and even homes may contain these and other types of dangerous goods. The law provides for exterior signs to be shown warning of significant amounts of dangerous goods on a site. These may take the form of the word HAZCHEM, or might display dangerous goods diamond symbols. The manifest box is another sure sign that dangerous goods are present.

Hazardous Material Regulations

The Hazardous Material Regulations require industry to seek input from the fire service if specified quantities of Hazardous Materials are exceeded. NFA can provide expert advice on matters relating to:

• Placarding (signage and identification of Dangerous Goods)
• Fire protection
• Emergency Management Planning

Our Structural Fire Safety Unit inspects premises with Dangerous Goods to ensure that:

• Fire prevention and protection measures are suitable for the goods
• Signs are present in accordance with legislation
• The site has emergency management plans when necessary
• The site has a manifest in a box at the gate when required
